Mama Natura® wins the silver!
Karlsruhe, 24 February 2014
In 2011, DHU created an umbrella brand for global roll-out, developed specifically for children, under the name ‘mama natura®’. The portfolio comprises homeopathic combination products that are indicated for common mild ailments and problems that children are exposed to, at different phases of their life, from 0-6 years.
The market launch of the brand was initiated and executed by DHU Iberica, Spain in the same year.
In July 2013, the DHU International division, with their branding agency Dew Gibbons & Partners, submitted the ‘mama natura®’ brand to the DBA Design Effectiveness Awards 2014.
The DBA Design Effectiveness Awards are run annually, and are the UK's most vocal champion of the role of effective design in the creation of business growth. It is the only award scheme that uses commercial data as key judging criteria. They demonstrate the importance of integration of the design brief with business aims and objectives, and the submitted case studies also serve to demonstrate the return on investment that a coherent, well-thought-out and professionally executed design strategy can achieve.
There were 19 categories that a brand could enter into and ‘mama natura®’ was submitted into the ‘Brand Identity’. Hundreds of entries were submitted, and at the end of 2013, 69 brands were notified that they would receive Gold, Silver or Bronze at the official awards, and ‘mama natura®’ was announced as one of the 69 winners!
On 13th February 2014, two directors of DHU Germany and Iberica attended the prestigious DBA Design Effectiveness Awards gala evening, as guests of the branding agency, Dew Gibbons & Partners, and it was announced that ‘mama natura®’ had received the Silver award!
Deutsche Homöopathie-Union celebrates 50th company anniversary
Karlsruhe, 09 July 2011
“In the midst of medicine” was the motto, under which Deutsche Homöopathie-Union (DHU) celebrated its 50-year existence in Karlsruhe on 09 July. Founded in 1961, today the business has 500 employees and is the market-leading manufacturer of homeopathic preparations and Schüssler salts in Germany. DHU’s experience in manufacturing and marketing homeopathic medications already dates back to the year 1866, when Dr. Carl Emil Willmar Schwabe founded the “Central Homeopathic Dispensary - Dr. Willmar Schwabe” in Leipzig. DHU originated from the Schwabe company and is now a sister company within the Schwabe group.
In his official speech, the President of the Lower Saxony Academy of Homeopathy and Naturopathy, Professor Volker Fintelmann, emphasised that an important characteristic of homeopathic medicines is their good tolerability. The secret lies in the fact that their effectiveness is exclusively mediated via stimulation of the body’s own self-healing powers.
In his words of welcome, the Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe, Heinz Fenrich expressed his joy at having DHU, as such a successful company, present in the city. He commended the noticeable interaction of tradition and modern techniques, seen, for example, in continuing traditional succussion by hand amid state-of-the-art technical equipment.
The Managing Director of DHU, Patrick Krauth, emphasised the point that the motto “In the midst of medicine” has long been a reality for homeopathy. In Germany, Europe and most parts of the world, it constitutes part of the “normal” therapy option. Also, from a medico-scientific aspect, homeopathy has long since been present within the midst of medicine. DHU Managing Director Franz Stempfle invited the anniversary celebration guests to the planting of a sequoia tree. This tree embodies many characteristics of the company such as size, stability and endurance and is – like DHU – something special. According to Stempfle, the tree, which grows to become many hundreds of years old, shall at the same time also act as a symbol for constant growth.

In the midst of medicine: 50 years DHU
Karlsruhe, 15 June 2011
Law of similars and potentisation is the hallmark of an ingenious therapeutic method created by Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago: homeopathy. The distinguishing feature of the method, to be able to effectively, gently and inexpensively treat diseases through activation of self-healing powers, is more topical today than ever.
According to a representative study of the Forsa Institute dating from 2010, in Germany, half of those questioned have already used homeopathy. A survey from “BKK Health” (Betriebskrankenkasse: Company Health Insurance Funds) revealed that over 80 percent believe in the effective power of homeopathic substances. The users applying them very frequently are almost all satisfied with effectiveness and tolerability of the medications (Forsa).
For Deutsche Homöopathie-Union (DHU), “In the midst of medicine” is thus the logical motto of their 50th company anniversary. The Karlsruhe firm is a market-leading manufacturer of homeopathic medicines in Germany. The expertise in this sector already extends back 145 years and began in 1866 in the newly founded company of Dr. Willmar Schwabe in Leipzig.
50 years ago at Schwabe, homeopathy was separated from the herbal preparations sector. Manufacture and marketing of homeopathic medicines, including the Schüssler salts, were transferred to the DHU. It was founded in 1961 and, since 1969, has been run as an independent company within the Schwabe Group.
Today, Deutsche Homöopathie-Union ranks among the three worldwide greats in the field of homeopathy. Through ten interacting companies and many international partners, DHU preparations are present in over 40 countries of the world. The spectrum comprises single remedies, Dr. Schüssler salts, Specialities, Pentarkane® (complex substance) and veterinary medicines in many different dosage forms. Among these, the globules are the most frequently used form of medication. DHU produces twelve-and-a-half billion a year of these. With barely 500 employees, the company offers 420,000 different products, 14,000 of which are held in stock. DHU produces 73,000 individual items a year.
It is estimated that half a billion people in the world use homeopathic medications. There exists a global trend towards medications from the natural sector. DHU not only meets the demand for them, but also offers a diversity of information and events. DHU is ready to help and provide answers wherever expertise and know-how are required in the field of homeopathy.
DHU receives award as ECOfit company
Karlsruhe, 18 October 2010
On 18 October 2010, Deutsche Homöopathie-Union received the award of an ECOfit company. ECOfit is an environmental advice programme of the state of Baden-Württemberg for medium-sized companies. Since 2005, ECOfit has been implemented in over 15 rural districts and towns in cooperation with the company Arqum (consulting firm for health and safety at work, quality control and environmental management). The aim of the programme is to improve environmental and climate protection and simultaneously save resources and costs. Deutsche Homöopathie-Union set itself this challenge last year, in order to also be exemplary in the environmental and climate sector. In the ECOfit programme, analyses of the actual situation are carried out with the participating companies and, together, measures are developed to improve the status quo in the field of environmental and climate protection.
In eight workshops, DHU participants, together with external advisors, worked over the most important environmental protection issues. The workshops were supplemented with four individual consultation sessions led by Arqum. The fact that 52 guidelines and laws alone, of relevance to DHU, in the fields of environment and occupational safety, were identified and re-examined, demonstrates the high significance of the project.

As a result of the ECOfit project, a higher recycling quota could be attained, e.g. in the field of waste management, through the introduction of the systematic separation of paper and residual waste in the offices. Following analyses for more efficient energy utilisation, further optimisation possibilities arose. Their implementation is currently being prepared by DHU environmental team members, Reino Löffler, Dr. Erwin Pfleging and Jörg Schneider. A comprehensive environmental guideline was compiled for DHU based on the results of the collaboration.
DHU successfully passed the final committee inspection and thus belongs to the first six distinguished companies from the urban district of Karlsruhe. On 18 October, DHU environmental team accepted the award in the town hall of Karlsruhe. Based on this project, DHU will be more active in future in taking on issues relevant to the protection of the environment and climate.
Allensbach study provides evidence: The population trusts homeopathy
Karlsruhe, 19 August 2009
Homeopathic medications are a concept known to almost all Germans. They are used and appreciated by more than half of German citizens. That is the result of a representative population survey by the Institute for Opinion Polls in Allensbach. The Federal Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, reg. soc. (Bundesverband der Arzneimittel-Hersteller e. V., B.A.H.), to which Deutsche Homöopathie-Union is also affiliated, had commissioned the study. Nowadays, almost the entire population in Germany is familiar with the term “homeopathic medication” (92 percent). Around 35 years ago, in 1975, only 76 percent of the West German population had heard of homeopathic remedies. Knowledge of the specifics of homeopathic preparations has also increased in Germany on a long-term basis. Today, approximately every sixth citizen spontaneously characterises homeopathic medications, without being given any specifications, about the principle of dilution or law of similars.
The circle of users has grown even more intensely than awareness in the last 40 years. While, in 1970, only virtually every fourth citizen of West Germany had ever taken homeopathic substances, today, at 57 percent, this figure has clearly more than doubled. Also, throughout the whole of Germany, the majority of the population (53 percent) is now using homeopathic medications, the greater proportion being women (64 percent). In total, one quarter of the population are dedicated users of homeopathic medications, i.e. they use homeopathic preparations and are convinced of their efficacy with no reservations (25 percent). A further 26 percent use these medications, but refrain, however, from passing clear judgement on their efficacy. By contrast, only 2 percent of the population consider homeopathic substances to be ineffective despite their own experiences.
The vast majority of non-users to date can imagine taking homeopathic substances in the future or at least does not rule out the possibility of doing so. Among these potential users, in total one third of the population (33 percent), there is an outstandingly abundant representation of young men, people from low principal-income households as well as those on statutory health insurance. Only 14 percent of the population reject the use of homeopathic medications, without having any experience of their own.
The pathway to homeopathic medication is predominantly via personal recommendations by close acquaintances (54 percent) or a physician or pharmacist (37 percent and 31 percent). In addition, explicit prescription from a physician (22 percent), but also medical reporting in newspapers, magazines, radio and television (21 percent) plays a role – however, rarely information from the internet (4 percent).
Users of homeopathic substances report on their successful application especially for colds and flu-like infections (60 percent). In addition, homeopathic remedies are also successfully used by many against a broad spectrum of different disease manifestations: from gastric and intestinal ailments, headache and insomnia to nervousness, skin diseases and circulation disorders to bronchitis, support in convalescence from diseases and the treatment of sports injuries. Two thirds of the population acknowledge homeopathic medications as having virtually no side effects (65 percent), a good half emphatically considers them to be well tolerated (52 percent). There is hardly any fear of adverse combined effects upon consumption together with other medications (10 percent) and only a minority considers a prescription from the physician or natural health professional necessary (26 percent).
Doors open for homeopathy in the EU
Karlsruhe, 08 April 2009
European Member of Parliament Daniel Caspary supports dialogue between manufacturers of homeopathic medications and the EU. Daniel Caspary, member of the European Parliament and representative of the administrative district of Karlsruhe, visited the German Homeopathy Union in Karlsruhe on Monday, 06 April 2009. The EU Member of Parliament obtained an overview of the challenges, which manufacturers of homeopathic and anthroposophical medications are faced with through EU legislation, and offered his support in the dialogue between the company and the responsible EU committees. Daniel Caspary was accompanied by Sven Maier, member of the local council of the city of Karlsruhe (CDU).
The visiting politicians were informed by representatives of the German Homeopathy Union and their colleagues from the companies Organic Remedies Heel (Baden-Baden), WALA Remedies (Bad Boll) and Weleda (Göppingen), of their concerns. The companies collaborate closely to campaign throughout Germany and Europe for better general conditions for their medications. Serving as platforms for these efforts are the Homeopathy and Anthroposophy Competence Forum, an initiative of the BPI State Association of Baden-Württemberg and its member companies, and - at European level - the European Coalition on Homeopathic and Anthroposophic Medicinal Products E.E.I.G. (ECHAMP).

The DHU, Germany’s market leader in the manufacturing of homeopathic medications, processes around 1,400 source materials in various potencies (dilutions), dosage forms and pack sizes. This yields a supply spectrum constituting over 400,000 preparations. This large assortment of medications involves particular organisational and technical effort with high costs on the part of the manufacturer, typical for all manufacturers of homeopathic and anthroposophic medications. Daniel Caspary became convinced of this during a tour through the modern production rooms. So far, medications of so-called special therapy orientations are incompletely regulated in the EU. Therefore, laws and regulations for conventional medications are often also applied to them, with no consideration for their particularities. This can lead to considerable problems for their manufacturers, as, for example, made clear by the discussion on legible formats on labels and package inserts.
More and more people in Germany and Europe are familiar with and use homeopathic medications. To be able to continue to offer these inexpensively and in a wide range, more appropriate regulations are necessary on the part of the EU, DHU Managing Director Franz Stempfle pointed out.
Daniel Caspary pledged his support, “to create awareness for homeopathy and the associated specific requirements at EU level.” The doors of the EU Commission are open for all issues, however “many Commission officials are lacking insight into the individual companies.” The information deficits resulting from this lead to a European policy, which inhibits growth and development of homeopathic medications and prevents European harmonisation and free trading of goods.
The European Member of Parliament welcomed the national and European initiatives of the companies of the special therapy orientations to accompany the decision processes in Europe early on with their expert and practical knowledge and to express their needs.
